Pu'er Tea

普洱茶 · pǔ ěr chá

Direct answer

Pu'er is a Yunnan tea system based on sun-dried large-leaf material. Raw Pu'er is compressed or stored for gradual transformation, while ripe Pu'er uses controlled pile fermentation to develop a darker, smoother profile sooner.

Key facts

Core originYunnan, China
Base materialSun-dried large-leaf maocha
Main pathsRaw Pu'er and ripe Pu'er
Common formsLoose leaf, cakes, bricks and tuocha
01

Raw and ripe are different paths

Raw Pu'er retains more of the initial sun-dried material and changes gradually in storage. Ripe Pu'er undergoes pile fermentation before final drying and compression.

02

Origin and material

Mountain, village and garden names matter only when supported by traceable sourcing. Tree age, harvest season, leaf grade and blending decisions also shape the tea.

03

Storage is part of the tea

Heat, humidity, airflow, packaging and surrounding odors influence aging. A famous year cannot compensate for poor or contaminated storage.

Practical guidance

For gongfu brewing, begin around 5g per 100ml with 95-100°C water. Use short early infusions and extend as the leaf opens.

Identification and caution

Age, ancient-tree claims and famous mountain names are not self-verifying. Require batch records, storage history and sensory evaluation.
